Claudine O’Sullivan is an Irish artist based in Glasgow. Working across painting and works on paper, her practice develops through endurance running as a form of field research, translating repeated routes into restrained abstraction through reduction, rhythm and spatial structure.
Running operates as both process and framework within the work. Immediate post-run drawings become the basis for paintings shaped by repetition, pressure and sustained movement through terrain.
She has exhibited internationally and received recognition through awards and residencies. Alongside her studio practice, she has collaborated with global brands including Apple and delivered workshops with organisations including the Royal Academy of Arts.
Movement as Method structures the practice, where movement, repetition and endurance are translated into spatial form.
Artist Statement
Running functions as both research and structural framework within the studio. Each body of work begins immediately post-run, where rhythm, repetition and resistance are translated into drawing through instinctive mark-making.
The work does not depict landscape directly, but registers sustained movement through it. Repeated routes become spatial structures shaped by endurance, attention and return. What appears restrained carries accumulated distance.
Through reduction and repetition, the paintings examine how movement reshapes perception and decision-making over time. Compositions resolve through pressure, rhythm and sustained force rather than accumulation or correction.
Movement as Method reflects an ongoing process of returning: to the same routes, the same marks and the same questions, until the structure holds.
