Claudine O’Sullivan Claudine O’Sullivan is an Irish artist based in Glasgow. Working across painting and works on paper, her practice uses movement as a form of field research, translating rhythm, repetition and resistance into restrained abstraction.
Endurance running remains a central framework within the work. Immediate post-run drawings become the basis for paintings shaped by accumulated distance, sustained movement and the experience of passing through terrain.
She has exhibited internationally and received recognition through awards and residencies. Alongside her studio practice, she has collaborated with global brands including Apple and delivered workshops with organisations including the Royal Academy of Arts.
Her ongoing framework, Movement as Method, examines how movement can be translated into spatial and compositional form.
Artist Statement
Movement functions as both research and structural framework within the studio. Each body of work begins through or immediately after physical activity, when movement is translated through drawing into a process of reduction, repetition and selection.
The work does not depict landscape directly but registers the experience of moving through it. Repeated routes become structures shaped by endurance, attention and return. What appears restrained carries accumulated distance.
Through drawing and painting, the work examines how movement alters perception, compresses decision-making and gradually reshapes space. Recent works have shifted from trajectory towards enclosure, where internal relationships and areas of held space become active compositional forces.
Movement as Method reflects an ongoing process of return: to the same routes, marks and questions, until the structure holds.
